Timing Belt Replacement Guide
TIMING BELT FAILURES CAN CAUSE SEVERE ENGINE DAMAGE
You need to know when to replace your timing belt and if your engine can be damaged if it breaks. Timing belts synchronize the action of the pistons and valves in the combustion chamber, preventing them from occupying the same space at the same time. If a timing belt breaks, synchronization is lost, valves and pistons collide, and significant engine damage results in "interference" type engines. Select your car make, model and engine type and note the mileage recommendation for replacement. Also note whether your engine is an "interference" type that can be severely damaged if your belt is not replaced in time.
NAPA Belts/Hose recommends replacement of the timing belt and idler pulleys at the same time. Additionally, if your engine has a water pump driven by the timing belt, you should replace the water pump at the same time.
